Unusual gravestones    Country Churchyards

Many of our AGS members are avid readers. If you are one of them, we hope you’ll join us on the third Sunday of each month for the AGS Book Club.  Each month we'll focus on a book about cemeteries, gravestones, mourning customs, funerary practices and death & dying.  We hope to include books written by AGS members, classics in our field, newly published books, as well as fiction that feature the subjects mentioned above.

Grab a coffee or a tea, cozy up, and join our conversation!

WhenSunday, April 28, 2024  at 7:00pm Eastern Time

Our selection for April 2024:

We are covering two short books:

Unusual Gravestones: Martin P. Nicholson and Claire C. Nicholson (32 pages)

The authors have viewed millions of gravestones, and are offering readers a selection of the rare and unusual gravestones that they have seen, with full-colour illustrations. Each category of type of gravestone, age of person, cause of death, rare names, and errors found on gravestones are given a points score to indicate rarity.

AND

Country Churchyards by Eudora Welty, Elizabeth Spencer (Introduction) (approximately 20 pages of text, the rest is photographs)

For many years Eudora Welty wished to produce a book about country churchyards. Published at long last in her ninety-first year, this book includes ninety of her photographs along with a conversation in which Welty shares her impressions and her memories of the 1930s and 1940s when she rambled through Mississippi cemeteries taking pictures. She recalls poignant and sometimes chilling experiences that occurred.
